The 2012 KSA Midsummer Flotilla starts and ends at Coecles Harbor, Shelter Island, but in between we have a great opportunity to visit some of the beautiful local harbors in these waters.  And because we only have to get from point A to point A, we can choose our destinations based on the weather, the winds, and just plain where we feel like sailing.  The real goal is to enjoy a few nice sails, as a fleet, without the pressure of needing to adhere to a preset float plan no matter what the conditions.  We can go far (there are a few 4-hour, 20 mile legs) or near (an hour and a half or so), we can race (how can we help ourselves!) or just saunter along at 3 kts., maybe heave-to for a swim.  And we will keep our motoring to a minimum!  We can go for the day and return, or we can anchor in a different cove each night.

We have four days – Tuesday to Friday, July 31 to August 3 – so long as we end up in Sag Harbor in plenty of time Friday to settle in, prepare to receive crew coming out from the city, and do any advance planning for the Rainbow Rally.  With the Wine Tour happening on Monday, captains might meet first on Sunday afternoon to look at the weather and the charts and sound each other out as to the group's wishes, then review our options as the cruise progresses, with updates via VHF.  The tides are perfect that week!

Note: Your cruise director will not be at the July meeting so email me with any questions:

Below are some of the best bets.  We don’t have to decide until we weigh!

Sag Harbor (our finish on Friday for dinner on shore and the Rainbow Rally)                     4.5 mi

Majors Harbor, Shelter I. (The best swimming, sandy beach, unspoiled.)                           5.5 mi

Orient Bay, North Fork (Behind “Bug Light” nearest to Greenport)                                     6.0 mi

Three Mile Harbor, East Hampton  (a spectacular, perfect harbor, great rafting spot)      6.5 mi

Smith Cove, Shelter I. (a surprisingly sheltered uncrowded anchorage)                             7.0 mi

Noyac Bay (An open, generous bay with many spots to drop anchor along the shore)       10 mi

Robins Island, Peconic Bay (waters never visited by KSA as a fleet)                                                16 mi

Fishers Island (two harbors await if we catch the current and cross the Race)                   20 mi

Lake Montauk (The most New England feel; we found a new, grassless anchorage!)        20 mi
